Can I paint my upper and lower cabinets different colours?

Yes you can, as long as you keep the following factors in mind.

  1. lighting. The amount of natural light entering your kitchen will have impact on the colour chosen.
  2.  Floor.  What ever colour selected, will pick slightly pick up tones of that floor, if they are along the same color spectrum.
  3. Colour on the walls.  This is a fairly minor thing to correct if they do not compliment each other.
  4. Counter top and backsplash.  They should be cohesive together.

Can I make the upper and lower cabinets different colours?  Yes, you can definately do that!  I would suggest the following to take into consideration when selecting the colours, as each will have an impact on the finished product.

  1. Lighting.  The amount of light entering in the room will have an impact on the colour chosen.
  2. Colour of the floor.  The colour you select, will pick up the tones in your floor, even slightly
  3. Colour on your walls.  You can always repaint your walls to compliment the cabinets.

What if I want new hardware on my cabinets, what to do?

So, you are getting your cabinets painted and decide to also change the handles or knobs?  Well this is an easy fix!  

If would want the position of the new handles/knobs in a different spot, you will first fill the existing holes.  

Next, you would want to measure where you want the new hole.  There is a template you can purchase for this, so that is will mark the same position on each door.

You would then drill through that spot, once done place the new hardware!

The most important part is to measure correctly.  The template is  like an angled ruler, measured and angled to the hole you wish to create.

WHAT SURFACES CAN I PAINT ON?

The following are some common questions we get asked when painting KITCHEN AND BATHROOM cabinets.

  1.  The surface of my cabinets is vaneer, can this be painted over? The answer is YES.  Vaneer is a thin slice of wood pressed onto an existing surface.  You must use the correct primer.  Styx primer from Benjamin Moore is an excellent primer that will adhere to the vaneer surface.  The primer must have this quality for adhesion!  It is the most important step.
  2. Will painting my cabinets last a long time?  The answer is YES.  As with most things in life, as long as the procedure is followed correctly, you will have a beautiful product that will last for years.  We use only the best products from Benjamin Moore for painting cabinets.
  3. Blog Post #2 UPDATE FOR SPRING 2024

What are the colour trends for cabinets this spring?

Updating your kitchen cabinets is ALWAYS a smart choice when you are looking for change.

You may consider using neutral blue tones for the lower cabinets, along with soft white tones for the upper.  This trend is quite popular this season.  An advantage of breaking up the colours for upper and lower is it can really balance your kitchen space and is quite appealing to the eye. The right colours will look stunning with this trend.  Darker green neutrals are also a great choice for lower cabinets this season.

Lower: KENDALL CHARCOAL. HC-166.

Upper: CLOUD WHITE CC-40.

Depending on the size of your kitchen, and how much light shines in, you COULD paint a darker colour for the upper and lower cabinets.  Factors to consider if you choose this option are

  1. kitchen size.  To have a darker upper and lower colour, your kitchen should be medium to larger size as a darker colour in small kitchen may close things in.  Of course, there are exceptions to this.
  2. Lighting.  Lighting plays a very important role in colour selection.  if you have a lot of light in your kitchen, then a darker colour would look gorgeous.  Typically, if you choose a darker colour the kitchen wall colour should be fairly light.
  3. Counter top and back splash colour.  Again, with a darker colour, the backsplash and counter should be lighter, at least to some degree.  It is very important to create flow and balance in your new kitchen space.

Blog post 1. Preparing your kitchen cabinets for painting.

Fresh paint on your kitchen cabinets is an inexpensive way to update your home!  The surface of your cabinets does not matter, as long as the preparation is done correctly.

  1.  you must sand the existing sheen from the doors, this will allow the primer and then paint to adhere to the original surface for years to come.  At Elite, we typically use a grit between 100 and 220.  you do not have to sand the sheen right down, but enough to scuff it up.
  2.   Apply 2 coats of Styx primer.  Use a 6 inch 10mm micro fiber roller to apply.  Sand in between coats.  Wait 6 hours to apply second coat.
  3. Apply 2 coats of Cabinet Coat paint, specifically designed for cabinets.  Sand in between coats.
  4. be careful in the kitchen for 30 days as it takes that long for the paint to fully cure!
